Linux Mint 12 Released

 

The long-awaited Version 12 of Linux Mint has arrived. The biggest feature is no doubt their own spin on a Gnome 3 desktop as well as an alternative version with the Gnome 2 fork MATE.

New features at a glance:

The Mint team has also announced that they have entered into a partnership with search engine DuckDuckGo:

In Linux Mint 12, DuckDuckGo is now the default search engine. Similar to Linux, it comes with a learning curve. You can use it easily, but you’ll need to go through a bit of reading to understand its power and how to make the most of it. Of course, if you’d rather use what you’re familiar with, we made it easy for you to switch away and add other search engines in Linux Mint.

As we announced it a few weeks ago, Linux Mint is entering the search market. Our product is free and our focus is dedicated on improving the Linux desktop. Almost all our competitors either charge for their product (Microsoft, Apple) or engage in commercial activities (almost all commercial Linux distributions). Our business model needs to fund Linux Mint and give us the ability to focus entirely on the desktop to guarantee we can continue to innovate and enjoy sharing our work for free. We’re community-driven, we’re financed by our community and by its activity on the web and its interaction with advertisers. The first search engine to share with us the income generated by Linux Mint users is DuckDuckGo, and as it happens, it’s one of the most interesting engines out there.

Linux Mint 12 'Lisa' Now Available

 

The Linux Mint team on Saturday announced the release of the latest release of their increasingly popular distro. The release of Linux Mint 12 “Lisa” comes at a time when the five-year-old distro is experiencing a strong surge in its popularity. Hit the jump to find out more about this biannual Mint release.

Here’s a list of all that is new in Mint:

GNOME 3 and MGSE: Lisa comes with a new desktop environment. Described as a “mix of old and new,” the Linux Mint 12 combines GNOME 3 with MGSE (Mint Gnome Shell Extensions). If you happen to be one of the critics of GNOME 3, you can temper it with MGSE for a slightly more “traditional” experience. But if it’s MGSE that you can not stand, you can disable all its components and savor some raw GNOME 3.

META: A fork of GNOME 2 that is compatible with GNOME3, it makes it possible to run both GNOME versions on the same system. However, it isn’t fully stable and is missing a few things at the moment. It’s present on the DVD edition of Linux Mint, while “users of the CD edition can install it using via the mint-meta-mate package.”

Search: Linux Mint 12 features a new default search engine, Duck Duck Go. Not quite a household name, Duck Duck Go stands out due to the fact that it doesn’t “show different results depending on who's making the search, it doesn't track or record user information, it provides you with optmized results and it's built on and contributes to Open Source.” Also, Linux Mint has partnered with some search engines and will now get a share in the revenue its users generate for them.

Ubuntu 12.04 LTS Will Not Support Old CPUs
