Twitter Acquires Mobile Security Firm Whisper Systems

 

Twitter has acquired mobile security company Whisper Systems for an undisclosed amount, both companies have confirmed.

Whisper Systems’ portfolio includes services such as Flashback, which offers encrypted backups for Android devices, and RedPhone, which provides end-to-end encryption for calls made on Android devices.

“We’re looking forward to bringing our technology and our expertise into Twitter’s products and services,” says Whisper Systems’ dev team in a blog post, adding that some services will be interrupted as the company transitions into a part of Twitter.

Whisper Systems is a small company, consisting only of two employees: security experts Moxie Marlinspike and Stuart Anderson. Marlinspike is the author of several well-known cyber security tools, including SSLstrip and wpacracker.

It’s unclear what, exactly, Twitter plans to do with Whisper Systems, but it’s not too far-fetched to imagine Twitter offering a service with an added layer of security to enterprise users.

In any case, having a top-notch security expert such as Marlinspike will surely benefit Twitter, which has had its share of security issues in the past.

How to see your retweets on Twitter

 

Twitter is gradually removing the Retweets tab from all accounts and merging it into the @username tab.

Editors' note: Unfortunately this quick fix was short-lived. However, this author is still seeking a new solution that isolates the retweets from other content on Twitter. If you have a suggestion or know of a solution, please add it to the comments, or share it with the author at cozdroid@gmail.com.

If you're running a Twitter account for a business, or if you're just curious about your personal reach within your followers, it can be difficult to sort through the @user tab's plethora of information.

So here's a quick fix for taking a look at your tweets, retweeted:

Log in to Twitter. Then, in the search box type:

include:retweets OR via @username

replacing "username" with your Twitter name.

If you find that the people retweeting you are using a different syntax (like "re:" instead of "via"), just add it to the end of the two search terms already listed.

For example,

include:retweets OR via @CNET OR re:@CNET

If you don't want to fuss with the search box, you can use this direct link by again replacing username with your actual Twitter name:
