Petition for Sports Online Captioning – from CCAC member

 

Please read and consider supporting this effort! Inclusion of quality online captioning is vital – it’s not something we should need petitions or lawsuits to accomplish in the modern world. Yet step by step, state by state, country by country, we are forced to make noise on this in any way we can, and reach out to others for their questions and understanding.

We are mega-millions who need and use real time speech to text translation for everyday life, not only for hearing differences, but also for language and other differences, for anyone in any noisy environment, etc. (See the CCAC webpages for a whole lot of more good information on this and related concerns.)

NCD Statement on the 19th Observance of International Day of Persons with Disabilities - December 3

 

The National Council on Disability (NCD) has issued a statement on the 19th observance of International Day of Persons with Disabilities, which is on December 3, 2011. This year’s theme is "Together for a better world for all: Including persons with disabilities in development." The World Health Organization estimates that 15 percent of the world's population has a disability with 80 percent live n developing nations. The NCD urges more workable solutions to help people with disabilities around the globe.

Closed Captioning Petition Deadline

 

Any US TV station or television programmer with a closed captioning waiver has until January 18 to refile it with the FCC. Some 300 waivers were issued by the Commission because of "undue burden considerations." But those exceptions, mostly given to religious groups, have been swept away. The TV stations and programmers are required to submit new petitions or else the programming in question is required to have closed captioning in place by the following day, January 19.

NCD Report Examines How to Improve Access to Critical Services for USMC Family Members with Disabilities

 

The National Council on Disability (NCD) has released a report that looks at the challenges of Marines with "Exceptional Family Members (EFM)," or family members with disabilities. The report, United States Marine Corps Exceptional Family Members: How to Improve Access to Health Care, Special Education, and Long-term Supports and Services for Family Members with Disabilities, shows that access to health care, special education and other supports for these families needs to be improved. NAD Concerned About Effect Of Stop Online Piracy Act On Closed Captions

 

The National Association of the Deaf (NAD) sent a letter to the House Committee on the Judiciary Chairman Lamar Smith and Ranking Member John Conyers, Jr. opposing the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA). SOPA is currently under consideration in Congress which may impede efforts to increase captioning and access to online videos.

NAD Demands Access to the Movies at Landmark Theatre

 

The National Association of the Deaf (NAD), along with two law firms, Stein & Vargas and Chason, Rosner, Leary & Marshall, LLC, brought a lawsuit against Silver Cinemas Acquisition Company for failure to provide captioned movies in violation of Title III of the Americans with Disabilities Act.
