FCC Co-Hosting Conferences on Accessible Mobile Communications & Access to Broadband - December 5 - 7

 

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is co-hosting the International M-Enabling Summit & Showcase at FCC headquarters and at the Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center. The conference will take place on December 5 and 6. Speakers will discuss ways to increase the availability and use of accessible mobile communications and services among senior citizens and people with disabilities. The FCC is also co-hosting the Broadband Adoption and Persons with Disabilities Inquiry Workshop. This free event at will be held at FCC headquarters in Washington, D.C., on December 7 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The workshop will look at ways to measure and promote broadband distribution and use by persons with disabilities across the world. 14th Annual Accessing Higher Ground Conference: November 14 - 18, 2011

 

The 14th Annual Accessing Higher Ground Conference taking place in Colorado this week focuses on the implementation and benefits of Accessible Media, Universal Design and Assistive Technology in the university, business and public setting. Other topic areas cover legal and policy issues, including ADA and Section 508 compliance. The creation of accessible media and information resources, including Web pages and library resources are a particular focus of the event.

DAISY Consortium Friend Dolphin Computer Access, Ltd will present a series of sessions Nov. 16 - 18 on alternate format production and tools for individuals with vision impairments and learning disabilities. Products to be featured include EasyConverter and EasyReader. Another DAISY Consortium Friend, Adobe will present Adobe Accessibility Sessions November 16 - 17. For the first time, Accessing Higher Ground will live stream one track during the main conference. More information is available on the Accessing Higher Ground website.

The Visual Learning Summit

 

A first-of-its-kind conference set for this Friday and Saturday will address the challenges faced by deaf children who are learning to read. The University of California at Davis summit is co-sponsored by Gallaudet University’s Science of Learning Center on Visual Language and Visual Learning along with the UC Davis Center for Mind and Brain and the departments of psychology and linguistics at the school. Hearing children learn to read by sounding out words, but deaf children have to do the same thing without that help. The organizers of the Visual Learning Summit believe growing up in a primarily visual world impacts language, memory and attention. Not only are there questions about how to best educate deaf children, there is a great deal for the hearing to learn from visually oriented learners. Speakers include Laura-Ann Petitto of Gallaudet University and Carol Padden from UC San Diego. For more click here.

Participants from 21 different countries gathered in Norway for a four day conference sponsored by the World Federation of the Deaf on the topic of “Sign Languages as Endangered Languages”.
