A patent a day, keeps Apple away – or at least, that might be what other companies are chanting these days in their respective meeting rooms after seeing how Apple and Samsung are duking it out in the courts of law across different countries in various continents. Well, Apple has just filed for a patent concerning a ‘digital handshake’ that will involve the use of invisible ink. This technology will require the integrated cameras on a couple of devices to be paired together, where this fusion will pave the way for a range of functions. Among the functions made available in this synergistic partnership would be normal items such as file sharing, as well as the ability to log on to one device using another or to share information in a game. No one is yet calling it “Antennagate: Part II,” but the battery life issues affecting some iDevices, in particular the new iPhone 4S, continues to drag on. And now comes word Apple may have to delay the release of a fix until later this month thanks to another issue with iOS 5, according to Redmond Pie.
It wasn’t that long ago Apple released iOS 5.0.1, which was supposed to fix battery life issues many are experiencing with the iPhone 4S and other iDevices. Yet, that “solution” never worked and Apple quietly went back to the drawing board. The company’s latest solution, iOS 5.0.2, was supposed to arrive for developers this week. Unfortunately, that is no longer the case because of memory leak issues.
Macerkopf, the site which appeared to confirm the all-remedying iOS 5.0.2 update as being released this week, has dramatically U-turned by stating that it “probably” will not rear its head in the coming days, whilst not really offering an ETA, either.
The site states that whilst the battery issues have been sorted out (where have we heard that before?), there are ongoing issues with memory leaks which require a little more scrutiny, so rather than have to release 5.0.3 almost immediately after, Apple has apparently decided to spend a little time and sort out all major issues. How noble of them.
The battery problems haven’t affected anywhere near as many people as the iPhone 4′s antenna issues, and only affects certain configurations – probably a defining factor in the delay. Some have reported deterioration of around 10% per hour, and although as smartphone users we’ve become used to the high juice consumption, this takes it to a whole new level.
First recognized soon after the iPhone 4S was released, the iOS 5 battery life issue is likely caused by a location services bug. Apple’s finally made it past the PC market’s “magic 5 percent mark.”
Buoyed by increasing sales in enterprise and explosive growth in the Asia Pacific, the company’s share of the global PC market passed the 5 percent mark for the first time in 15 years last quarter, according to analyst Charlie Wolf of Needham & Co.
Mac shipments grew 24.6 percent in September quarter, a period during which the broader PC market grew just 5.3 percent. It was the 22nd consecutive quarter that the growth of Mac shipments has outpaced the market. And beyond this, shipments for the past year represented 20 percent of the growth in worldwide PC shipments.
The Mac’s got serious momentum.
In the business market, its growth was a staggering 43.8 percent, over nine times greater than the 4.8 percent growth posted by the rest of the business market.
And in the home market? There the Mac saw 25.6 percent growth, compared to overall growth of only 4.0 percent.
Interesting, because in the home market the iPad was expected to cannibalize at least some Mac sales. In fact, during Apple’s third-quarter earnings call, CEO Tim Cook conceded that point. But evidently that cannibalization is minor at most, and far worse for Apple’s rivals. As Wolf observes, Mac sales in the home market have continued to increase while sales of Windows notebook PCs have slowed.
“The iPad is undoubtedly cannibalizing some Mac sales,” Wolf writes. “But it appears to be cannibalizing PC sales a lot more. In our view, this underscores the power of the halo effect in overwhelming the impact of any cannibalization the Mac might have experienced following the launch of the iPad.”
Which is essentially what Tim Cook said back in July.
“Some customers chose to purchase an iPad instead of a Mac, but even more decided to buy an iPad over a Windows PC,” he remarked at the time. “There are a lot more Windows PCs to cannibalize than Macs.”

Apple today released iTunes 10.5.1, a software update that officially brings iTunes Match to the masses for the first time.
Under the subheading “Available Now,” Apple states of iTunes Match:
A match made in iCloud.
With iTunes Match, even songs you’ve imported from CDs can be stored in iCloud. And you can play them on any iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, Mac, or PC — whenever you want and wherever you are, without syncing. iTunes Match is just $24.99 a year.
Here’s how it works: iTunes determines which songs in your collection are available in the iTunes Store. Any music with a match is automatically added to iCloud for you to listen to anytime, on any device. Since there are more than 20 million songs in the iTunes Store, chances are, your music is already in iCloud. And for the few songs that aren’t, iTunes has to upload only what it can’t match. Which is much faster than starting from scratch. Once your music is in iCloud, you can stream and store it to any of your devices. Even better, all the music iTunes matches plays back from iCloud at 256-Kbps AAC DRM-free quality — even if your original copy was of lower quality.
In order to purchase iTunes Match, you must first download and install iTunes 10.5.1 from within the iTunes application. From there, select “iTunes Match” on the left-hand of the screen and follow the directions.
First announced by Steve Jobs in June, the $24.99/year iTunes Match is pairs all your iTunes songs with iCloud, whether those songs were digital downloads or ripped from CDs. Once in iCloud, music is able to be streamed to any iDevice and stored at 256-Kpps AAC DRM-quality, even if the original song was of lower quality.

Apple moments ago released iOS 5.0.1 to the general public. The update, which primarily addresses iPhone 4S battery issues, is available over the air or via iTunes.
Other features include:
- Adds Multitasking Gestures for original iPad
- Resolves bugs with Documents in the Cloud
- Improves voice recognition for Australian users using dictation
- Contains security improvements
To update over the air from your iDevice, go Settings > General > Software Update and then follow the directions. This update is available for, iPhone 4S, iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPad 2, iPad, iPod touch (4th generation) and iPod touch (3rd generation).
This update also is said to resolve a dangerous security bug for those using a Smart Cover with an iPad 2, which was discussed on these pages a few weeks ago.
