How to program a Logitech Harmony remote

Universal remotes come in all shapes and sizes, but our top pick for controlling your entire home theater with one gadget is the Logitech Harmony remote.

The Harmony remote's greatest standout feature is its easy setup process. Instead of punching in complicated codes and using the remote's on-screen display, the entire configuration process is done on a Web site.

To get started, you'll need:

  • A list of all your home entertainment gear by model number
  • An internet PC with IE, FF or a Mac with Safari (not Chrome)
  • A USB cable
  • A Harmony remote

Grab those items and watch this how-to video to set up your universal remote:

2011 is quickly drawing to a close and it is time to for me to reveal my favorite products of the year. Check out my favorite home theater-related product picks for 2011.

Engadget's holiday gift guide 2011: HDTV and home theater

Welcome to the Engadget Holiday Gift Guide! We're well aware of the heartbreaking difficulties surrounding the seasonal shopping experience, so we're here to help you sort out this year's tech treasures. Below is today's bevy of curated picks, and you can head back to the Gift Guide hub to see the rest of the product guides as they're added throughout the holiday season.

For a crowd-pleasing holiday gift, it's hard to do better than a TV (or something that plays on or plugs into a TV), so naturally we're here to help you out once again. Of course, this is an ever-changing industry segment, but we've got you covered -- regardless of whether you need a flat panel or a projector. If you're out shopping for someone that has (or wants to) cut the cable, or someone that has every channel, there's something for you. Of course, we'd also recommend keeping a close eye on the tablet and gaming categories too, but companies like Roku, Samsung and Ceton are making sure you have all kinds of options dedicated purely to video. Give them a look after the break.

Home Theater Term of the Week: Dolby Pro-Logic IIz

Dolby Prologic IIz processing is an enhancement that extends surround sound vertically. Dolby Prologic IIz offers the option of adding two more front speakers that are placed above the left and right main speakers. This feature adds a "vertical" or overhead component to the surround sound field (great for rain, helicopter, plane flyover effects). Dolby Prologic IIz can be added to either a 5.1 channel or 7.1 channel setup.

For more details, check out the official Dolby Prologic IIz page.

Yamaha offers a similar technology on some of its home theater receivers called Presence.
