- What the stories are saying about the deaf?

A CI Catch-22 situation is taking place in Scotland
right how. Adel Wilson is a 14-year old musician,
already deaf in one ear and slowly losing the hearing
in her other ear. She wants a CI, but the government
told her she is not deaf enough to get implanted.
But if she is not implanted, she would lose her
musical skills. Her mother is currently fighting
the government.

The USA Today ran a piece titled “Schools lack interpreters for deaf students.” Quoted in the
story was Jeanne Prickett, superintendent of the Iowa School for the Deaf. She said:

It’s the individual student whose education may be compromised by less-than-qualified professionals.

Prickett, incidentally, will be leaving Iowa to take
over the Florida School for the Deaf and Blind at
the end of the school year.

- Very Hot News

The judge threw out the lawsuit in Alabama filed
by the Alabama Public Service Commission against
the state. This lawsuit was about $30 million dollars
that the Alabama Dual Party Relay Board collected
from landline telephone customers to fund the relay services. The state wanted the money to be used
for education, and the relay group said no.

- Thursday November 24th

The U.S. Department of Education is funding, to the tune of
$1.1 million for five years, a program for 40 Florida speech
pathologists to teach the Spanish-speaking deaf children how to hear. Will it work?

- Friday November 25th

The Silent Network is back. To read the press release, go to:
http://deafdigest.com/silent-network-is-back/

- Saturday November 26th

A deaf man, who was jailed for 25 days with no charges, and without
an interpreter around, has filed a lawsuit against the Adams County
in Colorado. He was living in a motel with his fiancee two years ago and they had an argument. He raised his voice during the argument;
the cops heard it and immediately arrested him.

…..

Deaf Miscellaneous stuff:

Teacher Eowyn Glass, not deaf, is caught in a tug of war
between parents and school administrators with the
West Perry School Board in Pennsylvania. This teacher
has many skills, including ASL, and she has been
shuttled back and forth between different classes at
different schools. It was pointed out that this school
district has one deaf student, and that the teacher was
a perfect fit in that situation.

LIES IN STORE ADS
Sometimes we see ads which mention “ASL speaking
staff” in shops or stores.
Are these ads honest? Many times the “ASL hearing
person” will struggle with fingerspelling – when trying
to spell:

Hi, my name is ……………”

Are these stores and shops liars? You decide.

DEAF HISTORY AND DEAF CULTURE RESEARCH IS VERY DIFFICULT
Is it easy to research Deaf History and Deaf Culture?
Just go to any library and find books on deafness? Just
go into any web site and google the word “deaf history”?
Very difficult. Information in books and web site
is not enough. A deaf researcher must pick little
bits and pieces of information from as many as 15-20
different books or web sites and put them together.
It is the same as putting together 1,000 piece
jigsaw puzzle in one hour! It is impossible.

WHY WAS THE DORM NAMED AFTER GALLAUDET?
Last week’s DeafDigest mentioned that a dormitory
on the campus of Central Connecticut State University
was named after Gallaudet. Why?
Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet was one of the founders
of the State Normal School (a college for future
teachers). And he gave the inaugural address
at the college just before he died in 1851.

CLERK, FLUENT IN ASL, COMMUNICATING VIA NOTES
This is a true story. A clerk, fluent in ASL,
was waiting on a father-and-son customers
at the counter of an auto supply store

They wrote a note that said:
We want to buy some auto parts

The clerk signed in ASL:
Yes, what parts are you looking for?

The customer whispered to his son (that the clerk overheard):
Why does he think I’m deaf?

The clerk interrupted and said:
Oh, I’m sorry. I thought you were deaf because you passed
the note to me

The customer said:
How dare you think I am disabled?

The clerk said:
I’m sorry, but why did you pass the note to me?

The customer said:
You’re an immigrant. How was I supposed to know that you
could speak English?

They walked out of the store!

AN EXPLOITED DEAF FOOTBALL PLAYER
About 25 years ago a school for the deaf had a great
football player. His play attracted offers from some
colleges, including CSUN.
That player went to a community college and played
two seasons. The CSUN coaches offered him a football
scholarship – but there was a complication.
The complication was that the CSUN coaches wanted
him to be accommodated by the National Center on Deafness
(NCOD) which provides interpreters and support services for
its deaf students.
The NCOD said no, because the football player was not
academically qualified and refused to accept him.
This deaf player played two seasons and the coaching
staff had to advise him on classes to take! Needless
to say, he never graduated. And he is struggling in
everyday life.
CSUN football? Yes, before this sport was dropped
in 2001.

Hot DeafNews boring, but important!

Deaf people getting “artificial” hearing, whatever that
is supposed to mean? Well, researchers from Japan’s Kyoto
University crafted an artificial membrane implant that is supposed to mimic what the real membranes are supposed
to do. Their findings were published in a Japanese
medical journal.

Deaf Question of the Week:

Q. Why is it often front page news when a deaf person
gets implanted?

A. The newspaper reporters think it is so sensational that
a deaf person would “automatically” become a hearing person
after years of deafness!
