DeafDigest dedicates this edition to Vinette Fern Doree,
a Minnesota deaf woman, that departed us. Do mention
her name with national deaf leaders and the chances
we should shrug our shoulders as to say “we never heard
of her.” She was a local mover and shaker, in her quiet
way in the Twin Cities area – fighting for rights and
needs of the deaf – be it new laws, more interpreters
and more money, etc, etc. Said her daughter:She was a pioneer in the deaf community long before it was popular, and she fought very hard for deaf rights

- What the stories are saying about the deaf?
At risk is the shutting down of the well known wildlife park,
the Galloway Wildlife Conservation Park in United Kingdom.
Funds needed to keep the park operating and to feed the
animals is desperately short. The owners of the park are
John Denerley and wife Kathryn. They are deaf.How to best integrate Gallaudet University with the
neighborhood has been a topic of considerable debate
with the Urban Land Institute Advisory Services Program
panel. We care about Deaf Culture that Gallaudet fosters,
but the neighbors basically do not care about it. The
big question is – how to pull Gallaudet out of its isolation and be a major part of the neighborhood,
especially the thriving Farmers Market across the street.
The panel is suggesting deaf-owned rental properties and
deaf owned stores and shops. But there is no silver
bullet answer.- Very Hot News
The School Sports Australia lost and Deaf Sport Australia
won. It was a lawsuit to allow a visual starter to be used
in a track meet so that a deaf runner would know the race
has started. Without it, the hearing runners would already
have taken off by the time the deaf runner realized the
race has started! The Australian Human Rights Commission
ruled in favor of the deaf runner.- Sunday November 13th
After spending 18 years as director of Texas Office for
Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services, David Myers has announced
his retirement. His last day of work is December 31st. David
is the last of the Old Guard, those who started in the vocational
rehabilitation field during the sixties as one of the first
deaf counselors in USA. Over the years he has moved on to
a number of administrative positions in various agencies
serving the deaf.- Monday November 14th
Did the FCC emergency broadcast warning test of last
week perform well? According to a deaf resident of
Houston, TX, there was an ASL interpreter on the
TV screen. That interpreter, however, was pictured
“half on the screen, half off the screen”!- Tuesday November 15th
The deaf people of Cebu, a province in the Philippines,
have been urging each store to designate one hearing
employee to learn sign language in order to communicate
with deaf customers.- Wednesday November 16th
CI manufacturer Advanced Bionics has been slapped with
lawsuits in Pennsylvania, Texas, Kentucky and
Oklahoma, on basis of product malfunctioning. It was
alleged that patients had to go through another surgery
to have the implants exchanged.- Deaf Miscellaneous stuff
Jobs are so hard to find that a job at a casino is one
to be cherished. Pittsburgh’s Rivers Casino has been praised for hiring seven deaf individuals. Said an appreciative employment placement specialist for the deaf:They’re not hesitant to hire our candidates

There was a story of a woman, who “became” deaf overnight
upon birth of her third child.
But upon reading the story further, it said that with each
birth (two of them) she lost more and more of her hearing. And that the third delivery made her “completely” deaf.
It was not as if she quickly became deaf after being
hearing all her life.

There was a story in the papers about deaf pre-school
kids in Monterey, California getting a new playground.
This makes DeafDigest editor wonder. Is there such
a thing as a Deaf Playground – as opposed to a regular
playground for all kids?
A Deaf Playground means total visibility; nothing
would block deaf kids from seeing everything. If
there is a Deaf House, then there should be a

There is a number of dormitories on the
Gallaudet campus.
But one dorm is interesting. The name of that
dorm is:Gallaudet Residence Hall
No, it is not on the Gallaudet campus. It is on
the campus of Central Connecticut State University!
How and why is there a Gallaudet dorm on that campus?
DeafDigest does not know. Probably because of its
proximity to the American School for the Deaf,
West Hartford, CT, which has a strong Gallaudet
heritage.COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR – continuing series
When people see me providing CART services, I am frequently asked how
someone becomes a CART provider or realtime captioner and how long it
takes.CART providers and realtime captioners use the same basic skills as
court reporters, so you would attend a school that teaches court
reporting. The National Court Reporters Association has a list of
NCRA certified schools and participating programs. You can get that
information on their website at www.ncraonline.orgAs far as how long it will take you to get through court reporting
school, that is a more difficult question to answer. Every person is
different. First you will learn the shorthand theory, and then you
will spend time building your speed. It is essentially up to you how
long it will take. It may take between two to five years, depending
on what school you attend.The programs in the schools are set up so that you must pass one
speed to progress to the next higher speed. For example, you must
pass tests at 100 words a minute in order to progress to the next
class at 120 words per minute. If that takes you six weeks or six
months, it is totally up to you. Most schools require that you pass

There are newspaper stories saying that technology will
render obsolete our sign language – and that the future
deaf will prefer to mingle with hearing than with their
peers – and that deafness will be completely eradicated
thanks to the CI and genetical engineering.True or false?
DeafDigest wishes to point out this following example:
A high school football star was recruited to play for a
hearing college, and was praised for ignoring Gallaudet’s
recruiting efforts. And after he finished his football
eligibility at the hearing college, no one was willing
to help him find a job or to get funding for his
hearing aid. He contacted DeafDigest editor, very bitter
about the way he was being “used” at the hearing college
for his football skills.next week – another example

A new book is being marketed - Prince Philip: The Turbulent Early Life of the Man Who Married Queen Elizabeth II, as
written by Philip Eade. The book said that Philip’s mother
was Princess Alice of Battenberg, a deaf woman, who did not
sign and relied on lipreading. She married Prince Andrew, but
during the marriage ceremony, the Orthodox priest asked
her if she agreed to the marriage. Not understanding what
he was asking, she said no! The marriage took place, anyway.
Princess Alice, as the mother, and Philip, as the son, were
not close. They hardly knew each other. This explains why
Philip had a reputation for being insensitive to the needs
of the deaf and of the disabled, often mouthing off bad jokes
about them.…….

Howard Gorrell’s lawsuits
(deaf activist Howard Gorrell will fight for what he believes -
legal rights and legal needs of the deaf; he is currently
involved with the lawsuit against state of Maryland over
congressional redistricting issue. In a short series, DeafDigest

Maryland Government (specifically Child Support Enforcement). The Court granted my motion for appointment of counsel AND a motion for extension of time (for allowing time to see if the Maryland General Assembly would pass my SB 928). The case was

Do parents of the deaf in the Ontario province of Canada care?
Schools for the deaf in Brantford, Belleville, Milton and London
are threatened with closing. The government staged meetings
throughout the province to hear out parents. Yet at one meeting
just one parent showed up!……
News of the Week – Looking Back 5 Years Ago:
A true story, though hard to believe. A
certain movie theater in Texas ran into
sound problems. A deaf man ran to the rescue
and restored the theater sound system!
A joke? No. The sound problem took place at
the Palace Theatre in Sequin, Texas. The only
person who knew how to fix the problem was
out of town. The only other person who knew how
to fix it was a deaf man. Not a hard of hearing
person with a hearing aid but a bonafide deaf
person. As deaf in deaf.
The deaf person was David Pierce who
rushed to the theatre. It took him two hours of
tinkering but got the sound system restored.
Said Pierce “Funny how hearies are depending
on a Deafie to fix the sound system.”
When DeafDigest expressed surprise that a deaf
person could fix sound, David said “One does not
have to hear to work with sound equipment.”
David Pierce? Palace Theatre? Sequin, Texas?
Sounds familiar?
Yes – David Pierce, a man of multiple skills,
is the one that owns Davideo Productions, draws
up weekly Old Fogeys for DeafDigest and promotes
these Deaf Film Festivals at the Palace Theatre
in Sequin, Texas.……
Deaf Apocalypse of the Week:
The judge turned down Netflix’s motion to dismiss the
case filed against them by a group of plaintiffs in a
Massachusetts courtroom. A win for us? Not really,
unless the FCC changes its regulations to require
internet web sites to provide captions. If the FCC
does not change the regulations, then Netflix may
likely win the lawsuit!….

The Commission for Deaf and Hard of Hearing is seeking an Executive Director (ED). The ED will be responsible for managing department directors and other agency staff; plan and direct new and current programs or services; oversight of the development of the Agency’s program budget projection; develop program goals and objectives; develop Request for Proposals; management and oversight of various Agency contracts; work and interact with the other State Government agencies; review proposed regulations; respond to multiple inquiries from legislators, other agencies and many interested parties; represent the Agency at meetings and public functions; participate in legislative activities that include presenting program and policy analysis; represent the Agency during legislative sessions.Qualifications for the position: A Master’s Degree in Business, Public Administration, Social Services or a related field is required for this position. Eight (8) years managing programs or projects that include strategic planning, and/or developing and implementing programs or services that require interaction with other agencies and/or with multiple parties to include five (5) years experience in direct staff management. Substantial experience with managing complex programs and budgets, significant experience in the administration of programs and services for the Deaf, Hard of Hearing and Deaf-Blind communities required. Master’s degree in linguistics, ASL, 1st and/or 2nd language teaching and

Knowledge and experience working with individuals with diverse educational, language, and cultural backgrounds. Ability to use judgment and tact with regard to sensitive issues and confidential matter. Ability to work well as an active, contributing member of a team as well as ability to work independently and demonstrate self-reliance and self-initiative. Experience producing written reports, proposals, and other documents related to research, best practices, learning and evaluation. Ability to use various software programs for project and program efficiency. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Fluency in ASL and English.
