There are always tales about voter fraud in every
election. A small voter fraud took place in Memphis.
A deaf woman wanted to register to vote, but the poll
worker turned her away, telling her she was not eligible
to vote. A hearing voter saw the whole thing and
intervened, and forced the poll worker to allow the
deaf woman to vote!While DeafDigest mentioned that the Harkins Theatres chain
(of Arizona) has agreed to put in captions, the deal was
sealed this week. The chain agreed to install captions in
the state’s 25 theaters and that the task will be completed
in summer 2012. Legal fees filed by the Center for Disability Law
will be paid by Harkins. This story, however, does not mention
that Harkins’ theaters in other parts of USA may not have
captions! This deal was for Arizona only.- Very Hot News
Years back, we had several non-profit law centers that worked
with deaf clients on a variety of cases. Now it seems that the
Midwest Center on Law and the Deaf (MCLD), based in Chicago, is the only one around. And word is that this center may close,
due to lack of funding, unless there is a last minute funding angel. MCLD sounds familiar? Yes, Howard Rosenblum founded
that agency before leaving it to become the NAD CEO.- Thursday November 10th
A mediator will determine if Ariel Depp, deaf West Virginia girl, could attend a nearby high school that lacks supportive
services rather than a distant high school with supportive
services that the county wanted. Depp’s mother has been at
odds with the school board and as a result, has been homeschooling the girl. DeafDigest has mentioned this
in previous editions.- Friday November 11th
Could deaf athletes, competing against hearing athletes,
get a level playing field, at least electronically? Yes,
if the NTID’s Innovation Lab team has its way. This deaf
team came up with a wristband vibrating device that
would vibrate at the starter’s gun. That device can also
be attached to any part of the uniform. The deaf lab team
won second place at the Shark Tank, out of 50 competing
hearing teams.- Saturday November 12th
Nepal’s deaf leaders has asked the national legislative body
to make sure that the rights and the needs of the deaf and
of the hard of hearing are being upheld.…..

SPREADING A RUMOR BY A HEARING PERSON
A hearing person wants to tell another hearing person
about a rumor. He comes to that person to spread the
rumor. His hands are in his pockets.
This same hearing person sees another hearing man
with a deaf man. That hearing person covers his mouth
with his hands to tell about that rumor.

There was a recent TV movie, a twist on the Gift of the
Magi. Both the husband and wife were broke and struggling
to pay the bills. The husband received a new set of driving
wheel for his hobby car, but he sold the car beforehand
without the wife knowing it. The wife received an expensive
camera lens for her photography hobby but she sold the
camera beforehand.
What about us, the deaf? A simple tale would be like this:- The deaf husband received a box of hearing aid batteries,
but he already sold the hearing aid- The deaf wife received a box of bulbs, but she already

Nepal is a mountainous nation, landlocked and nestled
next to China and India. And it is different from us
for one reason.
We have our own National Association of the Deaf.
We also have other hearing loss-related national associations.
Not that so in Nepal. Their premier organization is
called:National Association of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing
We cannot imagine our NAD being named the same as the

has the reputation for being the loudest stadiums around.
It is so bad that opposing teams must use hand gestures
or to lipread in order to get signals.

We lose 2 minutes of day light each day until December 20th.
Strangers (and even our friends and family) get confused about
those of us with Usher Syndrome. It is very difficult to understand the impact of night-blindness.During the day many of us do not use a white cane, yet at night we may be literally “lost” without one.
While some of our friends may not notice our tunnel vision during the day, our inability to get around easily in the dark is usually obvious.
For my Deaf-Blind friends, the National Federation of the Blind is giving away free white canes!
It is a good idea to use a good glowing refection canes during the “dark” season.

Individual provides independent living skills training and support for deaf and hard of hearing consumers to develop or maintain a maximum level of independence and ensure a higher quality of life living in the community. Provides all services outlined in the individualized service plan including skill development, training, education, support and assistance to each clients. Skill development areas focus on, but are not limited to, literacy, employment readiness, financial management, time management, using communication technologies, transportation and housing. Participates in the technology/equipment distribution as well as in the community education responsibilities of the Center. Conducts, develops and implements program activities for DHHARC. Glenside, PADeaf Services Center (DSC) is a dynamic team of behavioral health
professionals serving Deaf and Hard of Hearing children and adults.

you! E.O.E.DSC is looking for dedicated, motivated, energetic individuals who
are fluent in American Sign Language and knowledgeable about Deaf
Culture and the Deaf Community to fill the following positions:- OUTPATIENT CLINICIAN: (Full time/Part time)
This position provides clinical services to individuals and family
members on a fee for service basis. Responsibilities include:
Assessment and intervention for Deaf and Hard of Hearing individuals,
families and groups, utilizing a variety of communication modalities
to accommodate the need. Progress notes, treatment plans, discharge
summaries and other reports as required. Qualifications: The
qualified candidate shall possess: Masters in Social Work or
Counseling and license (LCSW or LPC) eligible in the state of
Pennsylvania; ASL fluency and Deaf Culture sensitivity; knowledge of
impact of hearing loss, assistive technology and needs of persons who
are hard of hearing; ability to work with both adults and children.- INTENSIVE CASE MANAGER for Residential programs: (Full time position)
This position provides resources and support to clients and their
families who reside the residential program. The qualified candidate
shall possess: BA/BS degree in a Human Services field preferred; or
High school diploma & 12 college credit hours in social science with
2 years mental health direct care experience. Must have strong
organizational skills; fluency in ASL, familiarity with other visual
communication modes and language levels. Must be willing to work some
evenings and weekends as needed and travel various areas in the
community. Knowledge of laws governing the rights of Deaf and Hard of
Hearing individuals including IDEA and ADA a plus; and must have a
valid driver’s license. Duties: Assess service needs of consumers
to insure continuum of care; develop service plans; independent
living skills instructions, advocate for access to public & private
services and programs such as medical, vocational and other services.- THERAPIST/PSYCHOSOCIAL REHABILITATION COUNSELOR: (Full time
position)
This position provides therapeutic and psycho-educational workshops
and group sessions for consumers who are deaf. The qualified
candidate shall possess: BA in psychology, counseling or any other
human services field; must have 2 years’ experience with individuals
with mental illness and/or mental retardation including treatment
planning and progress notes; advanced fluency in ASL required; must
be innovative, creative and be able to work in a team environment.
Duties: Develop, coordinate and provide group/individual therapy for
wellness maintenance and psycho-educational workshops.- RESIDENTIAL COUNSELORS: (various positions available) This position
provides direct client services including encouraging client
independence in areas such as skills in daily living and community
integration. Duties: Provide supported living and training to Deaf
consumers with mental illness and/or developmental disabilities
living in the community; promote consumers’ independence and social
relationships. Positions open for weekend and evening shifts.
Qualifications: HS + 1 year related experience or AA; valid drivers’
license; advanced fluency in ASL; minimum of 2 years’ experience with
Deaf Community; demonstrated competency in independent living skills;
ability to teach, advise and motivate Deaf Consumers; strong

Teaching Specialist Position American Sign Language Program

University of MinnesotaThe American Sign Language Program, Department of Educational Psychology, College of Education and Human Development, University of Minnesota invites applications for a full-time Teaching Specialist position in the area of American Sign Language.
Description: This is a 9 month, Professional Academic (P&A) appointment, 100% time, annually renewable, non-tenured position that involves fulltime teaching, but includes time for course content preparation, student performance evaluation, professional development projects and meeting with individual students as needed. This position focuses on teaching American Sign Language at the undergraduate level with responsibilities that include, but are not limited to:
Teaching (90%: Provide instruction at the undergraduate levels, teaching courses in American Sign Language (ASL 1701, 1702, 3703, 3704, and 3705). The individual appointed will prepare course content; evaluate student performance, meet with individual students as needed and complete professional development assignments.
Other Duties (10%) Participate in internal program/department meetings. Provide external support services/outreach. Other duties as assigned.
Responsibilities:
• Teach 6 sections of American Sign Language at the undergraduate level per Academic year.
• Prepare course content
• Evaluate student performance
• Meet with individual students as neededMinimum qualifications for Teaching Specialist Position:
• BA/BS degree in ASL Studies, Deaf Studies, Linguistics or related fields (candidates with BA/BS in other fields will be considered only if that individual can provide evidence of two years full-time teaching ASL using the Signing Naturally Curriculum)
• Native or Native-like fluency in ASLDesired qualifications • MA/MS degree in ASL Studies, Deaf Studies, Linguistics or related fields.
• Two or more years teaching ASL using Signing Naturally curriculum, Levels I, II, and III.Appointment Details: The person hired will be appointed to a full time position as a Teaching Specialist beginning January 12, 2012 and ending May 27, 2012.
